Breast Cancer Awareness Action Report
Jolanta Gerulskyte
On Friday the 28th of October 2007, my class and I took to the streets of Dublin to collect money for Action Breast Cancer. We were all based in the city-centre, mainly around Grafton Street, St Stephen's Green and Dame Street.
Our teachers chose this charity but we were all really pleased to be fundraising for such a great cause. We all wanted to raise as much money as possible for Action Breast Cancer.
We were all given boxes with keyrings, pins, ribbons and phone charms. We weren't worried that we would be ignored as I knew that Breast Cancer Awareness month was a well-advertised and well-supported cause.
I was based on Nassau Street and I found that most people were very generous and often insisted that I kept the change - for the charity of course! Apart from the odd smart comment or intimidating stare the day was very successful and enjoyable. So at the end of the day we headed back to our stations with our boxes full to the brim with the results of Dublin's generosity.
I learned a lot from this experience. I realised that people really value patience and that a smile will increase your chances of selling an item. I also learned that one in seventy men get breast cancer!
